Completed Projects

E-Bike Scheme

In 2019 a city wide bike share scheme launched in Hereford in partnership with provider Beryl. The scheme has been a great success and has grown from 72 bikes across 38 bays to 200 bikes across 65 bays throughout the city. The next evolution for the project was to introduce E-Bikes to enhance the accessibility and utility of the scheme.

The Sustainability & Climate Change team alongside the Delegated Grants team have been running successful active travel grant schemes for a number of years, helping businesses to become more sustainable and work more efficiently. In September 2020, as part of their Covid 19 response the government approved an Accelerated Towns Fund grant award of £750,000 to Herefordshire Council for eligible projects which could be mobilised and delivered by the end of March 2021. This project was awarded £292K which was  split into 3 schemes.

The Shell Store

The £7.3m”Shell Store” project is an extensive and sensitively redesigned refurbishment of the redundant Shell Store building (World War I munitions store) located within the Hereford Enterprise Zone. The Shell Store will create a business incubation and research facility that will support business growth and job creation, in 2500m2 of internal floor space. Just under two thirds of the building will be operated as an incubation centre for start-up and scale-up businesses.

The building which was an important part of Hereford’s history had lain empty & derelict before its transformation. Records suggest that about 8,000 munitionettes (female munitions workers) worked at Rotherwas during the First World War, drawn from all over the UK, and making up to 95,000 shells a week.

The building will be operated as an incubation centre for start-up and scale-up businesses. It will provide dedicated accommodation for up to 30 businesses in addition to hot desking space, meeting and conference space.
